Ken Powers replied:

Thanks Sandra! I had fun with this one and upped the blues a bit in my dark background mix to try to enhance the flower petals.

Carrie Harper

Lovely work, Ken. I'm impressed with the foreshortening of the petals that bit always stumps me. Love the sharpness of the indigo background..... did you use indigo or layers of other blues? Indigo is my absolute power color when I'm painting watercolors!!!

Ken Powers replied:

Thank you Carrie! Very nice of you to have a look! For the background, I mixed Prussian Blue and German Vine Black which are both from the Rublev paint company. I used four washes of roughly the same mix and applied one after the other while the paper was still damp. This helped even out the brush strokes but built the intensity. It still allowed some character to come through so there are areas of the background with subtle color variances. I didn't mix a big batch of the wash, I just mixed as I went to help create the effect. I am still experimenting with these dark backgrounds.
